Honda Earns Multiple Honors in AutoPacific's 2012 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards and Total Car Score's 2012 Top Scoring Car Awards

Honda has captured three of AutoPacific's 2012 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards for the 2012 Honda CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot, and four of Total Car Score's inaugural Top Scoring Car Awards for the 2012 Honda Ridgeline, Fit, Odyssey and CR-V.

"It's fantastic to have so much of Honda's outstanding product line represented in these awards," said Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing operations for American Honda. "AutoPacific's awards tell us we're creating truly satisfied owners, and the Total Car Score awards demonstrate how widely and well regarded Honda's products are among top authoritative sites."

AutoPacific's 2012 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA) are based on over 75,000 surveys completed by owners of new cars and light trucks in the United States in the first quarter of 2012.The VSAs are based solely on owner input, and are an accurate measurement of how satisfied new car and light truck buyers are with their recently purchased vehicle.

The Top Scoring Car Awards are based on Total Car Score's ranking formula, which utilizes the ratings from trusted automotive sites converted into a simple percentage. These ratings are translated into a single Total Car Score that allows car shoppers to quickly and easily compare cars.

Honda Brings the Red, White & Blue

800x600 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Honda’s big news for fleets is the new-for-2012 dedicated-CNG Civic Natural Gas (formerly the Civic GX), for which the manufacturer is predicting a three-fold sales increase over 2011.

The Honda CNG is powered by a modified four-cylinder, 1.8-liter engine yielding EPA-rated city/highway/ combined fuel economy of 27/38/31 miles per gasoline-gallon equivalent (GGE), a combined improvement of 10.7% from the Civic GX.

Coming in to ACT Expo 2012, Honda had 195 certified Honda CNG dealers, up from 125 a year ago, with 12 applicants pending, says Eric Rosenberg, assistant manager for alt fuel vehicles. That means some 20% of all Honda dealers are certified to sell the natural gas car.

There are certified dealers in 36 states, up from 33 states a year ago.

Honda just had its best first quarter ever for the vehicle, despite an incremental price difference of $6,935 over a gasoline Civic.

What’s more, Rosenberg says, the premium retail trim level, with navigation to find CNG fuel, “has been selling at a rate that is nearly twice our original projections, which bodes well for the retail demand for this car.”

Natural Gas, Electricity, Hydrogen

Honda introduced its pure battery electric Fit EV at the Los Angeles Auto Show late last year.

The battery car is “designed to meet the needs of an average urban commuter,” with single-charge range better than 75 miles. The Fit EV has a 20-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery and a 92-kilowatt coaxial motor derived from the motor used in the FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle.

Honda last month named Leviton as its preferred supplier of EV chargers.

Looking to the future, Honda continues its stalwart promotion of the hydrogen-fueled FCX Clarity, flagship for a zero-emission future.

The “star garnet metallic” (deep red) vehicle has a Honda-engineered fuel cell stack efficient enough to afford a single-fill range of 240 miles with a compressed hydrogen pressure of just 5,000 psi.

Honda’s Hydrogen Car Gets Quieter

Improvements this year include better dampening to reduce motor whine and compressor noise.

Honda’s continued promotion of the car is following a familiar alt fuels pattern, says Steve Ellis, principal (and stalwart) spokesman. With new hydrogen stations coming on line and more receiving funding, the map of fueling outlets “is starting to look now just like CNG stations looked in Southern California when we were developing our prototypes for the Civic Natural Gas.”

The CNG-fueled Civic GX was introduced in 1998.

Honda Floats New Personal Electric Vehicle

Moveslikejagger
Honda Motor Co. unveiled its latest electric vehicle Tuesday, but it is unlike any of the cars and motorcycles the company is best known for. Rather, the UNI-CUB single-seat, unicycle-like vehicle looks something like a vacuum cleaner with a bicycle saddle mounted on top. Indeed, viewed from the side, its black-and-white color scheme makes it look strikingly like a penguin.

Honda’s new personal mobility device is guided by a small wheel that protrudes from the back. It is intended to be used to get around the inside of large buildings like airports and museums. It was developed based on Honda’s earlier robotic personal transport device, the U3-X, which was unveiled three years ago.

On the UNI-CUB, riders move backward and forward, side-to-side or diagonally at a top speed of six kilometers per hour just by shifting their weight. It is latest product of the robotic technologies Honda has been developing, the most recognizable example of which is probably the ASIMO humanoid robot, which appeared in 2000.

Honda plans to sell the UNI-CUB on a commercial basis. As a step toward this, it will begin testing it in cooperation with Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.

Asked about his impressions of riding the UNI-CUB, the museum’s director, Mamoru Mohri — a former astronaut with NASA’s space shuttle program–described it as “floaty,” and “like being in zero-gravity.”

The UNI-CUB’s main competitor among personal mobility devices will likely be the Segway Human Transporter, which has been around since 2001. The Segway has two wheels about the size of those on an electric scooter that support a platform on which the rider stands. The device is controlled with a bicycle-like handlebar that comes up to chest height. The Segway can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Honda’s engineers say the UNI-CUB has its advantages. The rider’s hands are always free, and the saddle-style package makes it easy for the feet to reach the ground. Such features are important for “harmony” when weaving between and around walkers, they say.

But the UNI-CUB’s developers are most interested in how much value potential users will find in the vehicle, which will ultimately determine its price. An indication might be the price of the Segway, which costs around Y750,000 ($9,300).

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Driving in High Wind Conditions

Windy
Driving in high winds can be dangerous and even more hazardous because of the other weather conditions that normally accompany them. Extreme caution should be used when driving a car in any type of severe weather.

  • Be aware of the other vehicles around you in high winds. This is especially true with RVs, campers, trucks, buses, or trailers being towed.
  • Slow down the speed of your car to minimize the wind’s affect on your vehicle.
  • Avoid parking near trees, downed power lines and buildings.
  • The main factors that keep you on the road are the weight of your vehicle, so if you are driving a little city-car along the motorways in the high winds, you should be more carefully.
  • Plan ahead. As you have to drive more slowly in high winds you should expect your journey to take longer than usual and therefore leave extra time. You definitely don’t want to be speeding to make up the time!
  • Make steering corrections when driving from a protected to unprotected area. This is because the wind may move your car with a sudden force after being in the protected area.
  • Lower your speed when driving next to larger vehicles such as trucks and buses. These vehicles can swing out and hit your car if the wind picks up suddenly.
  • Listen to the radio for changes in weather conditions that could become more dangerous.
  • Wind is often accompanied by heavy rain or winter precipitation. Stay alert for slippery areas.

2012 Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid Coupe Recognized by USAA as a Best Value

2012hondacrzsporthybridcoupe-620x350

USAA, a leading financial services provider to the U.S. military and their families, today named the 2012 Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid Coupe to its second annual Best Value vehicles list, which identifies the top 2012 automobiles in 16 categories that give consumers the most bang for their buck. In addition, today USAA named the CR-Z to its "Top 10 for Teens List," which focuses on traits parents said they cared about most: reliability, safety and affordable insurance costs.

The Honda CR-Z rose to the top in the coupe category, recognized for offering best-in-class EPA fuel economy ratings, achieving the "Top Safety Pick" designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and offering reasonable maintenance and ownership costs.

Best Value automobiles offer the best financial value of all vehicles USAA evaluates as part of a broader rating system called USAA Preferred, which uses quantitative data to evaluate vehicles' cost, safety and reliability, among other key factors. There are nearly 80 cars, trucks and minivans that are currently designated as USAA Preferred vehicles, and the Best Value list represents the vehicles that rose to the top of each category.

"The CR-Z creates a whole new value category as the first true sport hybrid, offering great fuel economy, a low entry price, an available 6-speed manual transmission and a feisty change of character with the push of the Sport button," said Mike Accavitti, Vice President of National Marketing Operations for American Honda. "It's like having two cars for the price of one."

"The goal of the list is to help members identify vehicles that typically offer better safety ratings, lower insurance premium costs, higher fuel economy, better overall reliability and lower MSRP compared to other vehicles in the same category," said Steve Thompson, an assistant vice president at USAA. "The Honda CR-Z rose to the top as a vehicle that offers these key elements, making it a great buy for the value-minded consumer."

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Caring for Windshield Cracks and Dings

[[posterous-content:pid___0]] Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Checking your windshield is important because a ding that occurs in spring or summer can cause a break in the winter. Most people drive more in warm weather and more driving means more vibration, which can cause a ding to expand into a cracked windshield.

Warmer weather also means running the air conditioning. "The shock of quickly going from hot to cold stresses a windshield and causing that ding to suddenly become a cracked windshield," says Jim Olson, director of national accounts and brand awareness for NOVUS® Windshield Repair.

Here are some tips if you have a ding or star on your windshield:

Inspect the ding. If it has a cone shape, a circle deep in the glass or looks like a small star with points spreading out, have the ding repaired promptly. These are serious dings that can grow into a cracked windshield.

Don't touch a ding or attempt to repair it yourself. Without special equipment and training, you will only contaminate the damaged area, making repairs hard to complete.

As a temporary measure, put a piece of clear tape, like packing tape, over the ding. This won't keep the ding from spreading, but will help prevent contamination.

Don't wash the vehicle-especially through the car wash.  Soap and water can contaminate the spot and a high-pressure wash can cause the ding to expand.

Driving a vehicle with a windshield ding causes vibration and exposure to the elements cause the ding to spread.

Avoid slamming the car doors and don't close the doors with the windows rolled all the way up. The vibration or buildup of air pressure inside the car can cause the ding to spread.

Don't run the defroster, heater or air conditioning on high settings.  Don't park the vehicle in the sun. Rapid changes in interior temperature or prolonged exposure to sunlight can stress and weaken the windshield.
