Honda Owner Nears One Million Miles

 

The average American driver racks up 13,476 miles per year on their odometer. That makes “Million-Mile” Joe, of Norway, Maine, well above average; Joe has accumulated nearly one million miles on his 1990 Honda Accord over the last fifteen years. That works out to be nearly 4,700 miles of driving per month, meaning that Joe drives as much in a season as the average American drives in a year.

A former automotive service technician turned insurance claims adjuster, Joe is meticulous about his car's maintenance, and keeps detailed records of all services performed. He’s got notebooks full of data, and Honda reports that he’s taken nearly 700 pictures of his odometer to document the mileage. If nothing changes, Joe is on schedule to cross the one-million-mile mark this September, and Honda will be documenting his progress on their Facebook page.

Joe bought his Accord as a six-year-old used car in 1996 with 74,000 miles on it. His obsession with keeping records didn’t start until he crossed the 300,000 mile mark, but it’s safe to assume that Joe followed the car’s maintenance schedule religiously even if he didn’t document it. As remarkable as Joe’s achievement is, it really highlights the fact that manufacturers publish recommended maintenance schedules for a reason; stick to them, and you may have a million mile car in your own garage.

Honda receives its best ranking ever by J.D. Power & Associates

With a second place finish among all surveyed brands including premium makes, Honda has earned its best ever ranking in J.D. Power and Associates’ Initial Quality Study (SM) (IQS) for 2011. The top selling Accord and Civic were among seven models from Honda that earned the highest initial quality ranking in their respective segments, making Honda the industry leader.

Five of the seven models that earned the highest initial quality scores in the ranking were manufactured in North America. They include the compact Civic, the Element compact crossover SUV (the CR-V was second), the midsize Accord, the Accord Crosstour midsize crossover SUV, and the midsize Ridgeline pickup. The other two models were the Insight hybrid (compact) and the Honda Fit (sub-compact). The Acura brand was third overall in the 2011 IQS.

The 2011 study also recognized three Honda plants for superior quality. Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, in Greensburg, Indiana produces the Civic Sedan and is one of only three plants in the world to earn the Platinum Plant Quality Award. It is Honda’s newest auto plant in the United States. A Silver Plant Quality Award, Asia-Pacific (tie) went to the Suzuka, Japan plant, line 1 for production of Civic and Insight and a Bronze Plant Quality Award, North/South America was given to the East Liberty, Ohio, plant for production of the Accord Crosstour, CR-V and Element.

J.D. Power and Associates has been surveying owners to measure the initial quality of new vehicles after the first 90 days of ownership since 1987. The Initial Quality Study serves as an important tool for consumers in evaluating the quality and design of new vehicles.

"I purchased a used Honda Accord from a non-Honda dealership back in 2004. During a routine oil change at a random shop, they told me I needed a new alternator belt. I decided to take my car to an actual Honda dealership to have the experts look at my car, so I went to Ohare Honda. Unfortunately, there was a laundry list of services my car needed (keep in mind my car had well over 100,000 miles on it and until this point everything was great). Mark Ashkan was my service rep who explained in detail and SHOWED me what was wrong with my car. He brought me over to my car and had me look at the places/parts on/under the car that needed repair and compared it to another Honda so I could see what it should look like or how it should work. That was really important to me since I don\'t know a lot about cars, and I\'m always afraid I\'m going to get ripped off with unnecessary services/parts. Mark made notes to all the service items in understandable lingo that I could understand, and he made notes to the services that I should make a priority. It would be expensive! I asked Mark if he thought I would be better off buying a new car.
Mark introduced me to Mary Rycerz in sales, and she gave me an overview of all the cars in stock. She suggested we set up a time to talk more in depth about the CR-V that quickly caught my attention. I had a couple appointments with Mary, and each appointment was very pleasant. I never felt pressured into doing anything and she was informative of the product and very responsive to my emails. I had sent her emails about other small suv\'s in the competition and asked her why I should buy the Honda CR-V. She always responded with reasons and comparison charts on what the CR-V had and the competition didn\'t have. Our test drives were fun- not only did she point out all the gadgets that the CR-V had, but she pointed out a few things that a woman would love! \"You could put your purse here and your cell phone there...\" How could that not excite me! Of course, she pointed out the important stuff, \"the back seats go down for your dog, and the CR-V has more horsepower and room than the Escape..\" I\'m really happy Mary was my sales rep- she KNOWS what she\'s doing. I will definitely tell anyone I know that might be thinking of buying a car, to go see Mary.
The purchasing moment of the car wasn\'t so bad either! Mary and her manager gave me the selling price of the car and compared it to the bluebook price. Clearly, I was getting a deal. I sat with Sam S. who carefully but painlessly went through all the paperwork. Sam explained the importance of each document in a way that was understandable to a young lady who was purchasing her first new car. I made the decision to purchase the 2011 CR-V, and 6 months in- my car still smells brand new every time I get in! I'm very happy with my decision to purchase the car, and feel lucky to have worked with such kind and knowledgeable people at O'Hare Honda."
