Honda has unveiled a new concept which hints at the future direction of its popular CR-V SUV.

The new CR-V Concept, revealed July 25 and set to be officially displayed at September's Orange Country International Auto Show, is likely to bear a close resemblance to the final CR-V model, which will be on US roads by the end of the year.

The Japanese automaker has made the fourth-generation design more aggressive, with deeper sculpting of the body lines and a bolder front with thick three-bar grill and deeply-set headlamps.

The vertical rear taillights of previous CR-V models have also been embedded deeper into the design of the vehicle, with a more three-dimensional style - although this is a concept vehicle, previous models have proved almost identical to their production counterparts upon release.

Along with improved aerodynamics, the new model features a more fuel-efficient engine and is lighter than its predecessors, although exact figures haven't yet been released.

The CR-V is sold globally by Honda and had proved one of the most popular cars in the US, holding the title of the best-selling SUV between 2007 and 2010.

It will be one of hundreds of cars and trucks on display at the Orange Country Auto Show, which begins September 22 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Southern California.
