Honda’s new CR-V gains utility, comfort

2012_honda_cr-v_photo_4
It’s never easy to redesign a top-selling product, and manufacturers often struggle between evolution and revolution. Honda has been criticized for being too conservative with the revised Honda Civic, but it has chosen the right balance between old and new with the redesigned 2012 CR-V.

At first glance, the 2012 CR-V looks like a lightly tweaked version of last year’s vehicle, but place the two side by side and you can see that the new one has all-new body panels, a lower roof, a bigger interior and improved fuel economy. It is smoother and more refined although the test car’s cabin had a bit more wind or tire noise than I expected.

Prices range from $22,295 for a two-wheel-drive LX to $29,795 for an all-wheel-drive EX with leather and navigation. A rear-seat entertainment system is now an option in the EX-L. That model starts at $28,995.

The redesign reflects the trend for compact crossover SUVs to be more like tall station wagons and less like tiny trucks. The Honda’s softer styling and coupe-like window line and rounded tailgate makes it look sporty and less utilitarian, but in fact, it is more practical than ever because of the revised back seat and larger cargo area.

Folding the back seat is now quick and simple. All it takes is a tug on the release lever and the seat flops into folded position. The lever is at the back seat and another is toward the back of the cargo area. The cargo space is deeper, too, in spite of the slightly lower roofline.

The engine is the same 2.4-liter, four-cylinder, but it has a small horsepower bump to 185. This four-valve engine responds with good muscle at low rpm because it has a wide power band. The transmission is a five-speed automatic, where many competing vehicles have a six-speed automatic. Fuel economy is now rated at 22 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway for all-wheel drive and 23 city and 31 highway for front-wheel drive.

A button on the dash engages an economy mode that helps improve fuel economy by reducing the sensitivity of the throttle. Performance was slightly duller with ECON selected, but not dramatically different. The ECON button also alters the cruise control and climate control operation for greater fuel efficiency.

A new, electronically activated all-wheel-drive system reacts faster to provide optimum traction, yet it is 17 percent lighter and has 60 percent less internal friction. It sends power to the rear wheels when starting from a stop, and works in concert with the vehicle stability system, which the previous model did not. This system functions at all speeds, where the previous system did not engage the rear wheels at high speeds.

The restyled instrument panel is pleasantly configured. Illuminated arcs located on either side of the speedometer show if the vehicle is being driven in an efficient style. Similar to systems used on the Insight, CR-Z and Civic, these bars change color to show when your driving style is the most efficient.

The cockpit feels spacious, in part because of the deep dash and sloping windshield. The steering wheel has audio controls on the left side and cruise control on the right.

All CR-V models are equipped with a rearview camera that offers normal, wide and top-down views of what is behind the vehicle. The image appears on the five-inch LCD situated in the center of the dash. The small screen also contains readouts for the Bluetooth hands-free link, XM radio, text messaging and Pandora internet radio connection via a cell phone

The CR-V has front, side and side-curtain airbags. Improved safety features include side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, vehicle stability control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution. A tire pressure monitor is standard as well.

Price: The test CR-V was an EX-L with rear entertainment system. The base price was $28,995 and the sticker price was $29,805 with destination charges.

Warranty: Three years or 36,000 miles, with a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

2012 Honda Fit Wins Cars.com's $16,000 Subcompact Shootout

2012_honda_fit_photo_2
The 2012 Honda Fit has won the Cars.com $16,000 Subcompact Shootout. Honda's versatile and fuel-efficient Fit took the top spot in a competition among seven popular subcompact cars that seat at least four, have four doors, get at least 35 mpg on the highway, and can be purchased for less than $16,000. Experts from Cars.com, USA Today and "MotorWeek" tested these subcompacts to measure all of the needs of the average car-buyer including gas mileage, practicality, user features and comfort.

"We are thrilled to have the exceptional package that is the Honda Fit recognized by such a well-respected group of automotive media," said Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "To have topped such a wide group of competition in such a thorough, real-world evaluation demonstrates that Honda versatility, value and fun are standard even in our most affordable model."

"As gas prices and used-car prices continue to rise, a shootout like this acts as a guide for consumers looking to purchase a new subcompact as an alternative to a used vehicle," said Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief of Cars.com. "In addition to confident handling, a solid transmission, great visibility and unmatched practicality, the Honda Fit is just fun to drive and emerged as our clear winner."

Beyond this latest Cars.com shootout win, the 2012 Honda Fit is also an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK and received the 2012 Residual Value Award from ALG. The Fit topped the J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality Study(SM) (IQS) for 2011 in its segment, and is a six-time winner of Car and Driver magazine's "10Best Cars" award, having garnered this accolade every year it has been on sale in the U.S.

Honda Civic Earns NHTSA Five-Star Safety Rating

2012_honda_civic_photo_4

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released another batch of 2012 model-year crash-test ratings today. Under the stricter guidelines, the new 2012 Honda Civic and 2012 Hyundai Elantra each earned five-star composite safety scores.

NHTSA's composite scores are composed of five-star ratings for frontal, rollover and side pole and barrier tests. The side pole test, which is new, simulates a 20-mph side-impact crash into a 10-inch-diameter pole or tree at a 75-degree angle just behind the driver's side A-pillar.

NHTSA said it will test 74 vehicles for the 2012 model year, including 42 passenger cars, 22 SUVs/crossovers, eight pickup trucks and two minivans, representing 81% of the 2012 models by sales volume. At this point, NHTSA has released information on more than 60 models.

We would like to thank these happy customers for their reviews

"Owner of Hyundai since '06 --- I bought a Hyundai from there about 6 years ago before it was also a Honda dealership. I take my car there for oil changes and they are very knowledgeable and for the most part they don't push any additional services on you. I had received bad information from another Hyundai dealer and they were able to help me and I found out that other dealership was trying to just sell me a $1000 service that really wasn't necessary. I had other work done here and I was taken care of when they said and I even got a loaner to help out. Would recommend."

"O' Hare Honda's service is second to none. They are consistently attentive to their customer's needs by keeping them informed about their car. They also are always polite and non-condescending. They are my definite choice for service and sales."

Kate, we are happy to know Rich was able to make your experience a great one

"I had been working with Gina DiGiacomo by email but Rich Hoffman was our point of contact when we arrived to complete the sale and pick up our car. Rich was fantastic. He gave us all the information in a friendly and helpful manner, and was very solicitous about us having to wait for the finance individuals to become available. I felt he took excellent care of us as customers and appreciate all he did to expedite the process for us as much as possible. He even took us over to their sister store, the Hyundai dealer, to have the financing processed there to allow us to complete the sale more quickly. We came on an unexpectedly busy night, so we had to wait a bit, but Rich's attitude and concern more than made up for it."

We would like to thank this happy customer for sharing their experience with us

"My husband and I always take our cars in for scheduled maintenance at O'Hare Honda and we are very pleased with the level of service. The shuttle service to and form work is a definite bonus!"

"My wife and I purchased two cars in the pass year. An Accord manual which was very difficult to fine but O'Hare Honda went the extra mile to help us. We also purchased a CRV which again we have been very happy with. We have used O'Hare Honda for servicing both cars, during one of my oil changes it was discovered that our battery was not pulling effort power and it was replaced at no additional cost. We have been very happy with their service of our cars."

Honda CR-V, Odyssey and Civic Are Three of the 10 Best Family Cars of 2012

2012_honda_civic_photo_4
Three Honda vehicles have been named a 10 Best Family Car by Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com. The 2012 Honda CR-V, 2012 Honda Odyssey and 2012 Honda Civic have all made Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com 10 Best Family Cars of 2012 list. The annual list rates vehicles on 'family-approved' attributes like available safety features, comfort, child-friendliness, strong consumer ratings and impressive Kelley Blue Book Total Cost of Ownership statistics.

"We are honored to have three members of the Honda lineup recognized as benchmark family cars by Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com," said Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing operations for American Honda. "To be recognized as providing the kind of safety, features and value required of the modern family machine speaks to the core attributes of every Honda vehicle."

Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com has been naming the best family cars each year since 2008. This is the ninth time Honda has made the list, having garnered a previous award for the Civic, three previous awards for the Odyssey and one for the Honda Crosstour.

Kudos to our staff for providing the very best in customer service

"I got the lease on my Honda pilot at O'Hare Honda. The terms were the best I could find and the internet sales person (Gina) kept in touch and responded timely to all my questions. The process took over two months. My wife is very difficult when making this kind of commitment. Gina remained in contact and gave us encouragement. We were moderately discouraged upon arrival at the dealership when we had to wait ten minutes to talk to the sales person and it was not Gina! The gentleman's name was Ziggy and I felt sorry for this poor guy as my wife dismissed him. He could not see her coming. He thought the deal was done and for this he would sustain some abuse. He acted politely and dignified. John the sales manager came over and massaged all the bad emotions and fears. The next day we picked up our dark cherry red Pilot and were given a 30 minute orientation by a charming young man. I cant recommend these folks enough. Great people in a tough business."

"The service team at O'Hare Honda are really great. They are always courteous and don't try to push unnecessary repairs on me. I wish all service departments were like this."

"I brought my car in 2006 from O'Hare. I have had a good relationship with the
sales department and the service department. They always have my car ready when promised. I like going there as I get my Starbucks and watch the TV while waiting for my car to be serviced. They have a shuttle if needed. I have recommended both the sales dept and the service dept. to many of my friends.

Two of my friends have since bought Hyundai 's there. A few go to the service dept. even though they do not own a Hyundai. In April, my friend will be looking at the
new Sonatas. Looking forward to buying my next Sonata from there."
